Exteme Winter Storm Alert in California, 2023
If you haven't head, yet another climate catastrophe is striking in California.
My family lives in Northern California, where I am from. Every winter, we get thunderstorms and heavy rain — so much so that main roads would become partially flooded and occasionally homes as well. Heavy rainfall in Northern California isn't uncommon.
However, the recent surge in atmospheric rivers is not common. One to two atmospheric rivers is normal — 8+ confounding atmospheric rivers is not normal for California. In fact, it is the largest and most severe winter weather event in modern history in California. California's climate catastrophe whiplash — storms, drought, fires, sinkholes, mudslides, earthquakes and more — is evidence of the changing climate due human activity sadly.
