Southwest Plane Engine Exploded

Image 1. Click to open in original size.

Metal fatigue cause a Southwest Airline engine to explode causing the death of one passenger. Sharp metal broke a window and a passenger was partially sucked out of the window. Other passengers pulled her back in but were unable to revive her.

I wonder what makes a plane engine explode.

I believe that the metal weakens over time.

Yes, but with all the controls they do I would think they’d catch that before something happens.

"The examination was expected to take 12 to 15 months" - this is such a long time for the family and friends of the women who died.

All the best, Leia

The plane was inspected just two days prior. I don’t understand the fundamentals of weakened metal. But I do think they are referring to internal engine metal.

Interesting to hear the other pilot's thoughts on the video there, highlighting how important it was to lower the altitude so that the pressure decreased. Sad to hear that it still wasn't enough however.
