On this day in 1903 the women’s social and political union was formed by Emmeline Pankhurst to fight for women’s right to vote in Britain!

One of my lecturers knows her granddaughter! Currently they are in talks with Manchester City Council regarding a statue to commemorate her and her efforts.

When did women get voting rights in Britain? In Sweden it wasn’t until 1921.

Best regards, Niklas 🎈

#2 World War 1 was a major turning point for women's suffrage in the UK, as the women took many of the factory jobs that men had vacated. As a result of that (as well as other factors) women over 30 got the vote in 1918. However equal voting rights were not given until 1928.

Thanks, Jordan! It would feel odd if my wife, mom or sister couldn’t vote now, and yet it was only 100 years ago women couldn’t.

Best regards, Niklas 🎈

When I was in Switzerland 1981 it was interesting to talk about it with people engaged in the votings.

Women obtained the right to vote in national elections in 1971.[70] Women obtained the right to vote at local canton level between 1959 (Vaud and Neuchâtel in that year) and 1972, except for 1989/1990 in Appenzell.[17] See also Women's suffrage in Switzerland.
