Japan appoint new Emperor
85 Year old Akhito, abdicated the throne, which he had held for 31 years, to his son, Naruhito, in a ceremony yesterday.
It is the first time in 200 years that a ruling emperor has resigned from the role, which Akhito says due to his declining health and inability to complete the roles he used to do.
With the ceremony comes the start of the Reiwa era, succeeding the Heisei.
Interestingly the Japanese royal family is actually the oldest in the world, with it being traced back to 600 BC.
Read more about the ceremony, and what this means for Japan here.
I can tell Iโm getting older. I didn't think it was that long ago that the now former emperor ascended the throne. ๐
